Mid Ulster LFC vs Ballymena Allstars

On Wednesday past Mid Ulster travelled to Ballymena in the Carnegie Premier League to face Ballymena Allstars.  Having lost out by a single goal in the home game against this club Mid Ulster hopes were high of gaining some valuable league points. With Ruth Brown missing through injury Leanne Johnston slotted into an otherwise unchanged side.  The visitors got off to a shaky start and the home team dominated possession and indeed sneaked an early goal to put the visitors on the back foot.  Mid Ulster were really struggling to get into the game and as the Ballymena midfield dominated it was no surprise when they added a second goal some time later.  Pressure continued from the home team and after two good saves from Tracy Bell she will have been disappointed with the nature of Ballymenas third goal.  Ballymena couldn’t believe their luck and with Mid Ulster spirits low they took full advantage and managed a fourth goal before the half time interval. Whether it was the half time team talk or not but Mid Ulster started the second half like a different team.  An enforced change saw Clare Charles take over in goals from Tracy Bell but she had little to do as the Mid Ulster girls started to play like they can do.  Hayley O’Donnell and Adele Gillespe were running things in midfield and with Leanne Johnston and Simone Magill on the wings Laura Burton and Michelle Scott up front were finding a more frequent delivery of balls into the danger area.  At the back Karen Donnell, Colleen McCullagh and Mykylea Stewart were restored to a tight defensive unit under the guidance of Claire Brown.  For all Mid Ulsters pressure they were finding it difficult to hit the back of the net with the woodwork twice maintaining the home teams advantage.  By the time Hayley O’Donnells shot did find the net it was going to be too late to pull back a further 3 goals.  Rachel Stewart came on for Michelle Scott and she too had an effort just wide.  Whilst the second half was a more pleasing performance for the visitors it didn’t take away from a very disappointing night.  Final score Balymena Allstars 4   Mid Ulster 1 Team T Bell (C Charles), K Donnell, C Brown, M Stewart, C McCullagh, S Magill, A Gillespe, H O’Donnell, L Johnston, L Burton, M Scott (R Stewart). This week Wednesday 24 June Mid Ulster host Crusaders Newtownabbey Strikers at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena 7.30pm in the first round of the divisional cup.
