Home victory for the Ladies

Following a disappointing start to the league last week against Linfield, Mid Ulster ladies kicked off against Ballymena on Wednesday night for their first home game of the season.  The game was watched by a number of supporters and it saw the debut of Jacqueline Burns in her first competitive game for the Senior team. The girls were all looking very smart in their new kit kindly sponsored by the Railway Bar Cookstown and thankfully Adidas are realistic in their sizing so there were no tantrums about Big shorts or lack of them.

The new kit... Very smart and with big shorts

Simone Magill was out to prove that she could win more than the toss as captain and she calmly reassured those on the touch line that tonight was going to be the night. The game started with both teams showing a high level of commitment and on 15 minutes Mid Ulster had the first chance of the night.  A great ball out of defence by Karen Donnell picked out Lisa Richardson who did well to get a shot away but unfortunately for the home support the ball rolled by the far post.  Mid Ulster continued to apply pressure and Adele Gillespe was next to create an opening which she was unlucky to see go wide.  The game was still tight with Ballymena having their breaks too but Claire Brown had her troops at the back well organised and Jackie Burns in goals was making a confident start to her senior career as she tidied up a number of through balls from the Ballymena midfield.  On 19 minutes Mid Ulster made a deserved breakthrough when Ruth Brown chipped a lovely ball into the hardworking Simone Magill who beat the Ballymena Number 1 to the ball and dinked the ball over her head and goalwards bound.  1-0 to the home team.  This was just the start  the home team needed and minutes later Ruth Brown was on hand again to provide for Adele Gillespe to coolly slot home.  Mid Ulster were in control of the game and indeed there were further chances to come their way.  Hayley O’Donnell working hard in midfield turned provider for Ruth Brown but Ruth was unlucky to see her shot held up in the long grass.  Not to be outdone by her midfield partner Brooke Jordan was next to go close with a great strike from the edge of the 18 yard box.  Ballymena hadn’t given up and on 30 minutes they issued a wake up call to the home team when Rebecca Boyce picked up a ball on the edge of the Mid Ulster box and dispatched a fine effort to make the score 2-1.  This was the jolt Mid Ulster needed and they went on the attack straight from the kick off.  Lisa Richardson was having a great game on the left and after beating her marker she floated in a great ball which the Ballymena Number 1 looked to have claimed.  Simone Magill had other ideas as she stuck her head on it to force it into the net to make it 3-1.  Lisa Richardson then engineered a shot of her own but Ciara McCloy in the Ballymena goal showed great hands to make the save.  Ballymena continued to work to get back into the game and indeed Karen Donnell had a last ditch clearance to make to ensure the half ended with the home team maintaining their 2 goal advantage.  Karen also had time to offer some eloquent words of encouragement to Jackie in goals.."Jolly good work there Jacqueline" or words to that effect which apparently could be heard in Asda carpark! Mid Ulster started the second half as they had ended the first and good pressure earned the girls an early corner.  This early pressure continued and on 48 minutes Adele Gillespe released Ruth Brown to beat the offside trap and make the score 4 -1 to the home team.  Ballymena were still posing a threat too and Mykylea Stewart made a great last ditch tackle to thwart one such attack.  On the left side Colleen McCullagh was keeping her opposite number under wraps and also finding space to support Lisa Richardson in attack.  On 63 minutes Hayley O’Donnell played a great through ball to Adele Gillespe who again showed composure to beat the Ballymena number 1 and make the score 5-1.    Mid Ulster continued to apply pressure and on 77 minutes Adele Gillespe was on hand again to claim her third and Mid Ulsters 6th goal of the night after good work from Simone Magill.    On 78 minutes Jill Overend replaced Colleen McCullagh for Mid Ulster.  As the game drew to a close Mid Ulster created a few final openings and Adele Gillespe had a good shot well held by the Ballymena number 1.  Ballymena to their credit did not give up and in the 81st minute they scored again.  Wendy Young was on target for the visitors as the home team suffered a rare lack in concentration.  Not to be outdone Mid Ulster picked it up again for the final 10 minutes and Adele Gillespes last minute shot was just over.  This was to be the final action and a job well done for the Mid Ulster girls.
