Monaghan friendly

Pre season Friendly v Monaghan For the second year running Mid Ulster took up the invitation to play Monaghan Utd Ladies in a pre season friendly at Gortakeegan Park.  Having played out a 1-1 draw the previous year the Mid Ulster girls knew that their opponents would offer a stern footballing  test. Played on the 3G pitch, the game kicked off with both teams playing some nice football with plenty of good inter play and movement.  Mid Ulster were in the ascendancy from the start with Hayley O’ Donnell and Adele Gillespe dominating the midfield area.  Lisa Richardson and Simone Magill up front were causing the Monaghan back line more than a few headaches and with Chloe Barnes cutting in from the right to add to the fire power it seemed like it would only be a matter of time before a goal would come.  Indeed the Mid Ulster supporters thought this was the case when Adele Gillespe whipped a free kick from the corner of the box into the top right hand corner of the net only for it to be disallowed (apparently it was indirect).  Even our own qualified Referee Junkie couldn’t figure that one out as the foul leading to the free kick had been intentional in the first place.  Anyway the Mid Ulster girls carried on and on 13 minutes they got their just rewards.  Simone Magill got a super flick on to the incoming Lisa Richardson and she made no mistake in tucking the ball home.  This could have been the start of an onslaught but the home team regrouped and some good saves and last ditch defending kept the score as it was.  The referee also played his part in maintaining the scoreline when he dismissed appeals for what looked like a stonewall penalty after Simone Magill was upended in the box.  This let off for Monaghan seemed to spur them on and they started to be a bit more creative in the Mid Ulster half.  Brooke Jordan was outstanding winning everything in the air and forming a great partnership at the back with the experienced Karen Donnell.  On 38 minutes Monaghan pulled the game level with pretty much their first direct effort on goal.  A good break down the left wing resulted in a great cross / shot that floated over everybody’s heads and into the top right hand corner of the Mid Ulster goal.  This was to be the final action of the first half. The second half started with Monaghan on the attack and on 2 minutes the home team earned a free kick on the edge of the box.  It was struck well and totally against the run of play Monaghan took the lead.  This seemed to be the kick start Mid Ulster needed as from the kick off they went on the attack and some great work from Louise Murphy resulted in Mid Ulster winning a corner.  Monaghan initially cleared the danger but Adele Gillespe whipped the ball back in and Brooke Jordan was on hand to finish and grab her second goal in as many games.  The visitors were clearly lifted by this and 2 minutes later Mykylea Stewart made a great run down the right wing to play in a cross which Simone Magill met to score with a sublime header.  Both wing backs for Mid Ulster were pushing on well and Colleen McCullagh was having a great game even though she nearly ended up in the referees notebook.  Apparently its not a good idea to ask the referee if we are applying the offside rule in the game no matter how seriously you ask it. The Mid Ulster barrage continued and on 20 minutes Chloe Barnes was unlucky when her shot hit the bar.  There was not long to wait however until Simone did a great impression of Lionel Messi to dance past 4 defenders and slot the ball home for number 6 and her hat trick.  Seven minutes later it was Adele Gillespes turn to show a bit of individual brilliance with a super strike from 20 yards out that the Monaghan number one could just watch as it scorched the back of the net.  Ladien Cunningham then replaced the hardworking Chloe Barnes and the Mid Ulster girls wrapped up the scoring for the night when on 36 minutes Simone Magill made a great run and cross which Lisa Richardson met in the box to bring the tally to 8.  The final action was the introduction of Clare Charles for Louise Murphy who had put in a great shift on the left wing.  Ma nearly made an immediate impact but she just hadn’t the speed to latch onto a great through ball from Simone Magill.  Shortly after the final whistle sounded and the Mid Ulster girls can congratulate themselves on a job well done. Final score Monaghan Utd 2 Mid Ulster 8.   This performance will carry the team well into the start of the league campaign on Wednesday night 20 April away to Linfield. Mid Ulster Team.
