Pre season success

Mid Ulster entertained Portadown at the Mid Ulster sports arena on Sunday 3 April in the first proper outing of the 2011 season.  Although the visitors currently play in Division 1 the Mid Ulster girls knew they would have a game on their hands having previously played the Portadown girls in the Football 5s competition. With everyone keen and eager to go Mid Ulster started the game well and Hayley O' Donnell and Ruth Brown were dictating the pace in mid field for the MId Ulster girls.  The possession in the midfield was providing plenty of openings for the front pairing of Adele Gillespe and Simone Magill and it was only a matter of time 3 minutes to be exact before Adele Gillespe opened the scoring.  Not to be outdone her strike partner Sunnie was on target just a minute later.  Portadown didnt let the heads go down and they continued to try to play the game but Mid Ulster were in the ascendency.  Colleen McCullagh and Louise Murphy were torturing the Portadown right side of mid field and this combination forced a number of good saves from the Portadown keeper.  On 17 minutes Simone Magill was on target again after a cracking through ball from Ruth Brown.  Adele Gillespe wrapped up the scoring for the half with two further well taken strikes. The home team started the second half as they had finished the first and after 5 minutes Brooke Jordan struck with a debut goal as se reacted first to an inswinging corner.  Adele Gillespe weighed in a minute later with her foruth of the game.  Mid Ulster made a number of changes and the substitutes all slotted in seamlessly. Deborah Rankin had a quiet afternoon but she showed good hands on the rare occasion that Portadown threatened and in front of her Claire Brown & Karen Donnell mopped up any threat that Portadown showed.  Jill Overend pushed on from left back and was combining well with Lisa Richardson and Stacey Lee and the Portadown defenders could not relax for a moment.  More pressure from Ladien Cunningham forced a corner and another great delivery from Lisa Richardson resulted in the Portadown defence turning into their own net. This was to be the final score of the game although Hayley O'Donnell, Stacey Lee and Lisa Richardson all went close but the girls can be proud of a job well done.  Another great sign for the future was the introduction of Under 15 international Jacqueline Burns for her first senior appearance for the club.
