Preds win again

Mid Ulster hosted Newbridge Predators in the NIWFA Frudles Premier League on Wednesday night.  Having been well beaten by Preds in last weeks game the Mid Ulster girls were out for revenge.  The game started with the both teams busy in the midfield area without really creating any clear cut chances.  The first real action for the home team was a good flick on from Adele Gillespe but her strike partner Stacey Lee just couldn’t get on the end of it.  The game was shaping up to be a tight physical affair with no holds barred by either side.  Unfortunately Lisa Richardson was on the end of one such physical tackle and she took a heavy challenge which required lengthy treatment.  Thankfully she got back to her feet and was able to return to the action eventually.  Unfortunately the game was nearly over by the time she got back on as the referee didnt hear the 20 people on the side line shouting at her (until Big Bird spoke).    With the half wearing on chances started to appear.  Adele Gillespe lost her marker with a smart turn but was unlucky to see her shot go wide.  Predators responded immediately and only a great clearance off the line by Chloe Barnes prevented them from taking the lead.   More pressure from Predators saw a shot go just wide and it was a bit of relief from the home team when Hayley O’Donnell held up the ball well in midfield to win a free kick for the home team about 30 yards out from the Predators goal.  Mykylea Stewart took the kick and it nearly sneaked through forcing the Predators number 1 to scoop it round the post for a corner.  From the corner Predators counter attacked swiftly but a great tackle by Claire Brown cleared the immediate danger.  More pressure from the visitors saw Deborah (Subo) Rankin in the Mid Ulster goal called into action for the first time and she held on to the shot well.  Undeterred by the earlier challenge on her Lisa Richardson was getting back into the game and after avoiding a few kick boxing moves she played a great ball into the areato release Stacey Lee for a shot that went just wide.  More chances followed for the home team as Adele Gillespe released Lisa Richardson but once again the final effort was just off target.   Preds will definitely have been glad to hear the half time whistle as Mid Ulster went close again with Adele Gillespe and Stacey Lee but the score remained 0-0 at the end of the half. Predators started the second half well and Ruth and Claire Brown had to be on their toes to clear some early danger.  In the middle of the park Brooke Jordan was having an interesting battle with her opposite number and apparently got head butted in the ear (accidentally of course).  On 16 minutes the Mid Ulster girls got a warning as Preds hit the post from a corner.  Mid Ulster reacted well to break quickly but Lisa Richardson just couldn’t get the ball on target.  Like the first half the action was now end to end and in such a tight game it was going to be a mistake that broke the deadlock.  Unfortunately for the home team such was the case.  A bit of hesitation in midfield led to the ball being pinched by the Predators and Julie Ann McCann drove forward to score with a great strike from 20 yards out.    With Mid Ulster still reeling from this Predators pretty much wrapped up the points when they forced a corner.  A good ball in was well met by Michelle Crawford to head the ball in off the underside of the bar.  2-0 to the visitors.  Mid Ulster tried to pick their game up again and Stacey Lee and Adele Gillepse again combined to create a chance for the home team but they just couldn’t find the final touch.  Substitutions then followed as Rachel Stewart replaced the battle scarred Lisa Richardson and Emma Mc Farland took over from Mykylea Stewart.  Karen Donnell tried to rally the troops and a corner late came out to Rachel Stewart but her attempt at an acrobatic overhead went harmlessly wide.  So the game ended 2-0 to the visitors and next up for the Mid Ulster girls a visit to league leaders Glentoran Belfast Utd. Team D Rankin, C Brown, R Brown M Stewart (E McFarland), K Donnell,  L Richardson (R Stewart),  B Jordan, H O’Donnell,  C Barnes, A Gillespe, S Lee.  Subs not used C Charles next up is an easy away trip to Glentoran BU! The club would like to thank The Railway Bar Cookstown for their continued Sponsorship for the season.
