Cup victory for Mid Ulster

Wednesday night saw a break from League action for the Mid Ulster Girls as they travelled to Loughgall for a League Cup match.  With a few of the normal line up missing there were opportunities for a few off the substitute bench to make an impact.  Mid Ulster were coached for the game by 80s TV Cop Don Jonson (not sure were Noel had got to).

Our new coach "Don"

Mid Ulster started the game well and immediately had Loughgall under pressure with Adele Gillespe winning an early free kick.  Lisa Richardson had the strike but her effort was just over the bar.  Loughgall built their first attack from the kick off but Emma McFarland in her first Senior start snuffed out the danger with ease to set the Mid Ulster girls on their way again.  Brooke Jordan was next to have a go and she nearly put one over on her former team mates but was unlucky to see her shot pull just wide.  The early pressure continued and on 6 minutes a great move saw Emma McFarland feed Stacey Lee who played in Simone Magill who cleverly beat her marker to place the ball in the back of the net.   The visitors continued to press and with Loughgall playing a very attacking formation their 3 man defence was really up against it.  Brooke Jordan again won the ball in midfield and fed Simome Magill who this time turned provider for Adele Gillespie who fired home on 12 minutes to double Mid Ulsters advantage.  Mid Ulster tails were truly up now and shots followed from Simone Magill and Hayley O’Donnell but both were just over the cross bar.  Loughgall however were still a threat on the break and a great breakthrough was only cleared by a super covering tackle from Emma McFarland.  As the half wore on Mid Ulster started to cause more problems this time on the left wing.  Louise Murphy put Lisa Richardson down the wing and Lisa finished a great run with a cracking curling left foot shot (some would say it was a cross)to make the score 3-0 with half time looming.  Two minutes later Loughgall really were wishing for the half time whistle when a penalty was awarded to Mid Ulster after a loughgall player handled the ball in the penalty area.  Up stepped Adele Gillespie and confidently doubled her total for the night.    Stacey Lee and Lisa Richardson both had opportunities before the half time whistle but the half ended 4-0 to the Mid Ulster girls. Both teams began the second half unchanged and Mid Ulster started as they had finished.  Great interplay between Hayley O’Donnell, Emma McFarland released Simone Magill to cross into the box for Stacey Lee to score Mid Ulsters fifth of the night.  Minutes later Stacey Lee had another attempt on goal but Laura Simpson in goal for Loughgall held the ball well.  Adele Gillespie was next to go close with a dipping shot just over the bar.   On 68 minutes Mid Ulster made their first change with Jill Overend replacing Louise Murphy at left back.  Loughgall started to work their way back into the game and even won themselves a few corners but Ruth Brown and Karen Donnell cleared any danger.  Even when Loughgall did get a shot on goal Jacqueline Burns was more than equal to any efforts.  On 37 minutes Racheal Stewart replaced Simone Magill for Mid Ulster and as the game drew to a close a momentary lapse in concentration from the Mid Ulster girls allowed Chelsea Smith for Loughgall to break through and score a well taken goal.  Although the Mid Ulster girls were a little disappointed at conceding their clean sheet they finished strongly with a shot from Adele Gillespie going just over the bar.  More pressure saw the Mid Ulster girls win a corner and great chasing down by Karen Donnell saw them win another corner with Hayley O’Donnell having a final crack before the full time whistle sounded. Final Score Loughgall 1  Mid Ulster 5 Team: J Burns, R Brown, K Donnell, L Murphy ( J Overend), E McFarland, S Magill (R Stewart), B Jordan, H O’Donnell, L Richardson, A Gillespie, S Lee.  Subs not used E Junk, C Charles Next up an easy tie against Glentoran!!!
