Defeat to Strikers in the League

Mid Ulster returned to NIWFA Fruddles Premier League action on Wednesday night when they travelled to Seaview to take on second placed Crusaders Newtownabbey Strikers.  Played on the 3G pitch at Seaview some of the Mid Ulster subs bench were discussing the great smell of “takeaway” that was wafting around the ground.  Having identified the smell as the Thompsons animal feed factory we wont be asking Murphs to get the grub in future!!  Meanwhile on the pitch Mid Ulster got off to a great start winning an early free kick when Lisa Richardson was fouled.  Simone Magills effort from the left hand corner of the penalty area went just over.  More good work on the right saw Hayley O’Donnell make a penetrating run down the wing but unfortunately her cross couldn’t find any of her team mates.  Strikers then had some pressure of their own and an early corner needed the bar and then a good block on the line from Mykylea Stewart to prevent the home team taking the lead.  Mid Ulster response was immediate and Chloe Barnes sent Simone Magill away on the right.  When the cross came in Chloe took up a great position to flick a header which went just wide of the post.  The Mid Ulster girls were in control at this stage.  New signing Claire Rooney was keeping Helen McKenna under wraps whilst Claire & Ruth Brown, Karen Donnell and Mykylea Stewart were able to break down any Strikers attacks.  This was allowing Brooke Jordan and Hayley O’Donnell to push on in support of Simone Magill.  It was not undeserved when on 22 minutes Simone Magill made a foot of space and floated a great ball into the top right hand corner of the net to give the visitors the lead.  No Fluke this time from Sunnie!!

Sunnie does the highland fling!

Strikers tried to react immediately but Mykylea Stewart was on hand to make a timely interception and set the Mid Ulster girls on their way again.  Although Strikers were seeing plenty of the ball clear cut efforts on goal were few and far between and it looked like a set piece might be their best chance of a goal.  So it was to prove and when they won a free 25 yards out Natalie Boyd drilled in a powerful effort which Jacqueline Burns in the Mid Ulster goal just couldn’t keep out and the half finished with things all square. Strikers started the second half in determined mood and an early Helen McKenna strike was just over the bar.  5 minutes later McKenna had the goal in view again and this time her shot hit the target to send the home team into a 2-1 lead.  Mid Ulster then made a change with Adele Gillespie replacing Chloe Barnes but the Strikers pressure continued.

Hayley on the attack

A Strikers corner was cleared only as far as Danielle McDowell who saw her shot go over the bar.  Mid Ulster continued to soak up the pressure but on 17 minutes a great ball through saw Natalie Boyd beat Jacqueline Burns to the ball to open up a 2 goal lead for Strikers.  Mid Ulster picked themselves up from this set back and started to exert some pressure on the Strikers back line.  Good work from Lisa Richardson needed the Strikers number 1 to be on her toes to clear and further efforts saw Brooke Jordan go close with a header.  The game was now end to end with Mid Ulster trying to get back into the game and Strikers proving to be dangerous on the counter attack.  Jacqueline Burns had to stand tall when Clare Carson for Strikers was through 1 on 1 but she couldn’t find a way past the Mid Ulster number 1.  A great closing tackle from Claire Rooney sent Mid Ulster away on another attack and this time Adele Gillespie ran onto a Simone Magill flick on to draw out the Strikers rear guard.  Gillespie slipped a perfect ball back inside and Magill neatly tucked it away to bring the visitors back into the game.  Strikers were in no mood to give up their advantage and a minute later their lead was restored when a Lyndsy Patterson shot crept in at the near post to the disappointment of the Mid Ulster support.  Mid Ulster pushed again but it wasn’t to be and only for a fine save from Jacqueline Burns the scoreline could have been even more flattering for Strikers. Final Score: Crusaders Newtownabbey Strikers 4  Mid Ulster 2 Team: J Burns, C Brown, M Stewart, K Donnell, R Brown, C Rooney, B Jordan, H O’Donnell, L Richardson, C Barnes (A Gillespie), S Magill Subs not used:  L Murphy,  J Overend, E McFarland, C Charles, E Junk.
