Final League game V Linfield

With a relegation play off looming Mid Ulster took to the field on Tuesday night for their final game of the 2011 NIWFA Frudles Premier league.  With little to play for the home team took the opportunity to rest a number of players and to give the younger girls a chance to show what they could do.  Linfield provided the opposition and whilst the honours in the league had already been wrapped up a win would improve their finishing position. The game saw a debut for Dana Bettany and a number of changes to the normal Mid Ulster line up.  Linfield started the game brightly and immediately had the home team under pressure but Jill Overend (on the eve of her 21st birthday) and Claire Rooney tidied up the danger at the expense of a corner.  The corner came to nothing and Mid Ulster began to get a foothold into the game.  Louise Murphy went on a great surging run down the left wing but she was unfortunate to be taken out by a blade of grass and she didn’t even get a free kick!! Claire Brown was leading by example with a surging run out from the back and a great ball through to Dana Bettany who was unlucky to be flagged just offside.  More pressure from the home team saw Chloe Barnes win a free kick 25 yards out on the left hand side.  Hayley O’Donnell took the kick and the Linfield number 1 had to on her toes to tip the ball over the crossbar.  Her midfield partner Brooke Jordan was next to go close with a shot from outside the area which pulled wide.  Linfield then went on the attack and a good tackle from Mykylea Stewart conceded a corner.  A good delivery was flicked on at the near post and Teri Moore for Linfield met the ball well to head Linfield into the lead.  The Mid Ulster girls kept the heads up and continued to press Chloe Barnes trying to set Emma McFarland through but once again the Linfield defence had played the offside trap to perfection.  Just goes to prove Women do understand the offside rule.  It was a wonder Emma was fit to run anywhere as she had a Linfield player climbing all over her for most of the game.  The Mid Ulster girls forced a number of corners as the half drew to a close but they couldn’t get the finish they required.  As the half time whistle approached Claire Brown took a knock and was replaced by sister Ruth who barely got onto the field before the half time whistle sounded. The second half started with Chloe Barnes carrying on her good work from the first half harassing the Linfield defence and chasing down every ball.  The right hand side partnership between Emma McFarland and Mykylea Stewart was helping the Mid Ulster girls get into advanced areas but still the final ball was hard to come by.  A free kick saw a good delivery into the box from Louise Murphy (even after being tripped by a blade of grass on the other wing) but the ball broke to Claire Rooney on the edge of the box and although her shot was on target she just didn’t catch it with enough power to trouble the Linfield keeper. (more wheatabix required for Claire)  Good closing from Emma McFarland saw a clearance from the Linfield keeper that could have dropped to anyone but unfortunately for the home support it didn’t fall to a Mid Ulster player.  Linfield then had a spell of pressure of their own and Ruth Brown had to be on her toes to clear an effort off the line and Jacqueline Burns then relieved the pressure by claiming the resultant corner.  A worrying injury to Claire Rooney saw Adele Gillespie enter the game and although she worked hard the Mid Ulster girls still could not find a breakthrough.  Another free kick awarded to Mid Ulster 30 yards out saw Brooke Jordan try her luck but her effort didn’t trouble the Linfield keeper.  Hannah Turkington was next to make her debut and even though her first involvement was to be upended by her opposite number  she dusted herself down and showed some great determination to win the ball back.   As the game drew to a close the Mid Ulster girls just couldn’t find an equaliser and the game finished  1-0 to Linfield.
