Juniors V Donegal Celtic

The U15s and a couple of invited guests travelled to Belfast on Sunday to play Donegal Celtic in a friendly.  Previously arranged as a league fixture, Donegal Celtic had to pull out of the league due to a shortage of players at the U 15 age group.  With DC fielding a number of older players this gave the Mid Ulster girls a chance to play 2 of their 15 year olds in the game.  Making guest appearances were Abigail Edwards and Dana Bettany and they were very welcome addtions to the squad.  With captain Emma Mc forsaking us for hockey trials Jacqueline Burns took the toss and the game kicked off on a lovely Autumn afternoon.  The early exchanges were pretty even and the Mid Ulster back line was very solid with Alexandra Lavery strong and Erin Mullholland showing no signs of fatigue after only returning from a hockey tour of Holland on Saturday.  On the left handside of midfield Mid Ulster were having great joy with Eden Lavery tormenting her opposite number and creating chances for Rachel Kelly and Mollie Young just ahead of her.  DC were a strong side and early in the half they had a spell of good pressure that resulted in the home team taking an early lead.  This did not deter the Mid Ulster girls as they pushed on to try to draw level.  Lyn Sommerville and Mollie Young went close before Dana Bettany was on hand to bring the Mid Ulster girls level.  Mid Ulster continued to press as the half progressed and both wingers were able to push on ably covered by Rachel Rodgers at left back and another fine performance from Georgia Boyd on the right.  The half finished with the score level and the fact that coach Clare spent the most of the team talk on the phone seemed to work wonders as the girls went out and took the game by the scruff of the neck.  Lyn Sommerville was terrorising her opposite number and had the DC back line quaking with her pace and trickery.  With Rachel Kelly switched into the back line Mid Ulster were looking solid and although Jacqueline Burns was rarely troubled her kicking was an extra weapon in the Mid Ulster armoury.  Dana Bettany and Abigail Edwards experience in the middle was telling and some great play from the Mid Ulster girls was creating plenty of attacking opportunities.  Lyn Sommerville was on fire scoring 4 more goals.  The football was great to watch and was appreciated by the large group of spectators that had gathered at the side of the pitch.  The girls had attracted a large number of admirers much to the frustration of the DC players.  Some of the frustration spilled over into the DC play and one young lady was lucky not to receive her marching orders as she made a petulant swipe at Eden Lavery behind the referees back.  Eden was the complete professional in her reaction to the incident, we thought she had been taking lessons from Mykylea Stewart!!  In fairness to DC they did settle down and as the game drew to a close they did pull back a consolation goal but it was too little too late and a great result for the Mid Ulster girls.  Final score Donegal Celtic 2  Mid Ulster 5 Team J Burns, A Lavery, E Mullholland, R Rodgers, G Boyd, E Lavery, L Sommerville, D Bettany, A Edwards, R Kelly, M Young. A special mention must go to Eimear McGarrity who acted as assistant coach for the girls and full time baby sitter to Scott.  I think she got more of a work out than some of the players!! The girls rounded off the afternoon by catching the second half of the N.Ireland U17 game against Israel at Seaview.  Unfortunately the result was a disappointing 2-1 defeat but hopefully we will see some of our girls on the international squads of the future.
