First friendly outing for Mid Ulstr ber girls

Mid Ulster continued their pre season preparations with a friendly against Monaghan Utd Ladies at the Mid Ulster sports arena on Wed 20 March.  With a number of last seasons first 11 unavailable this was a chance for a host of new faces to make their full debuts for the team. The game was played in a competitive spirit and with both teams on their first outings the exercise was one of gaining some match fitness and giving the new faces a chance to adapt to the 11 aside game.  Mid Ulster were making good work down the wings but they couldnt fashion a clear cut chance and a free kick from 25 yards from Brooke Jordan was the closest the girls went to breaking the deadlock.  At the other end Monaghan didnt get any joy out of the Mid Ulster back line with Rooney, Hannah Turkington, BJ and Lousie Murphy protecting Tiffany Lindsay in her first outing in goals. Lisa Twinkle toes Richardson and Ruth "Ears" Brown were leading by example to the new recruits breaking up the Monaghan attacks and driving the Mid Ulster attack on.  Lisa even had time to sit down and tie her laces in between attacks. The second half saw no change to the Mid ulster line up (possibly because they had no subs) and Monaghan had the option to make 5 changes.  Once again the game was evenly balanced and Mid Ulster thought they had taken the lead when a great burst from Rebecca Edwards resulted in a ball through to Jessica McGurk and she calmed side footed the ball home.  Unfortunately for the home supporters Jessica had just drifted off side and the goal didnt stand.  Monaghan stepped up their attacks with the fresh legs and Mid Ulster defended a number of well delivered corners with Tiffany Lindsay punching clear and Louise Murphy clearing off the line.  Hannah Turkington at right back was having a great first outing and in tandem with Chloe Barnes they set up a couple of daring raids down the right side.  As the game wore on Jessica McGurk succumbed to cramp and this meant a bit of a shuffle with Ma coming into goals and Tiffany Lindsay moving to centre forward to partner Abigail Edwards.  Tiffany wasted no time in getting in amongst the Monaghan back line and unfortunately took a bit of a bash on the thigh for her troubles.  With a number of the Mid Ulster girls feeling the pain Monaghan siezed the initiative and a first time ball through was taken well by the Monaghan centre forward on the half volley and looped over Mas head to the back of the net.  With the game drawing to a close their was one final Monaghan attack but this time Ma was on her toes and out to clear just as the final whistle sounded. A worthwhile exercise for the girls, well done to all and thanks to Junkie for the tea and buns afterwards.
