League opener v Glentoran BU

Mid Ulster opened their league campaign with a nice easy visit to last seasons league and cup winners Glentoran BU on Wednesday night.  The Mid Ulster girls took to the field in confident mood (well Noel was confident anyway) hoping for a bit of an upset against the reigning champs.  The first half was a close affair with both teams creating chances.  Michelle Scott returning after maternity leave had the first chance of the game for Mid Ulster but her effort went just wide.  Sunnies new boots were dazzling the BU defence as she showed great footwork on a number of occasions to hold the ball up for Hayley O'Donnell and Ruth Brown linking up from midfield.  Mid Ulster looked assured at the back with Claire Rooney and Claire Brown solid at the heart of the defence and Emma McFarland and Lisa Richardson coping well with the threat from the Glentoran wide players.  Jackie Burns in goals for Mid Ulster had a few shots to deal with but nothing out of her comfort zone and the game was nicely posied after the first 15 minutes.  Unfortunately for the visitors an uncharacteristic lapse in concentration let the home team take the lead.  A corner in from the right elluded everyone and Kelly Baillie was on hand at the back post to give Glentoran the lead.  Mid Ulster responded well and both Simone and Michelle had half chances to pull the game level.  Louise Murphy was finding space on the left wing but the Glentoran back line were quick to restrict this.  With the scoreline 1-0 at half time Mid Ulster were still very much in the game.  Both teams started the second half unchanged and although Mid Ulster had some good spells of possession it was Jacqueline Burns who was called on to make a good save after 11 minutes.  With Mid Ulster getting some joy it was ironic when Glentoran doubled their lead with a cross come shot that dipped just over the tips of the retreating Jacquelines finger tips.  A change for Mid Ulster saw Mykylea Stewart enter the game and the substitution nearly paid immediate dividends with Simone Magill playing in Michelle Scott.  Michelle had the ball in the net but she had just strayed marginally offside and unfortunately for the visiting team the referee had seen it too.  Rebecca Edwards then made her first league appearance replacing the hard working Chloe Barnes as the Mid Ulster girls pushed to get back into the game.  With spaces appearing and the light disappearing Glentoran wrapped up the points when a swift attack was finished off with a bullet header from Mykyla Mullholland. Final score Glentoran BU 3  Mid Ulster 0 Team: J Burns, C Rooney, C Brown, E McFarlandez, L Richardson, R Brown, H O'Donnell, C Barnes (R Edwards), L Murphy (M Stewart), S Magill, M Scott. Subs not used: A Edwards, H Turkington, T Lindsay no game next wednesday due to International fixture next up is Linfield at MUSA Wed 2 May 2012 7.30pm
