Mid Ulster finish with a win

Mid Ulster travelled to Fermanagh on Monday passed for their final Euro Electrix Premier league game of the season.  Both teams were light on numbers due to holidays and injuries and the fixture had no relevance to the final position that either team would finish in the league.  Mid Ulster were already guaranteed of a best ever finish in the Premier League in third place whilst unfortunately Fermanagh had already been relegated. Both teams were treated to the privilege of playing on the main pitch at Ferney Park which is now a regular venue in the Mens Irish league Premier division.  The pitch was immaculate and both teams served up a display of football that was fitting to the venue. Mid Ulster saw a few old faces return to the squad with Karen Donnell back in action after the birth of her son earlier in the year and Rachel Stewart who had been largely unavailable this season due to work commitments.  Bringing the average age up about 20 years was Ma who was down as a last gasp sub.   Mid Ulster started the game superbly and after 2 minutes Stacey Lee was on the score sheet.   Simone Magill took the ball to the by line before cutting a ball across the 6 yard area which Stacey Lee guided to the net 1-0 to the visitors.  Fermanagh were struggling to deal with the movement of Simone Magill and this coupled with great running down the left flank from Stacey Lee led to a second goal that was an even better version of the first one.  With 7 minutes played it was 2-0 to the visitors and Fermanagh were up against it.  From the kick off Mid Ulster won the ball back and Claire Rooney played a cracking ball through to Simone Magill who finished calmly to make it 3-0.  Mid Ulster were buoyant and everyone wanted to get on the ball but fair play to Fermanagh they stuck to their task and tried to find a way into the game.  Mid Ulster had further spells of possession and pressure but Fermanagh were edging their way into the game and Jacqueline Burns in the Mid Ulster goal had her first shot to save after 20 minutes.  Karen Donnell was showing that she hadn’t lost her touch during her absence winning everything in the air and linking up well with Lisa Richardson and Claire Brown to play Mid Ulster out of danger.  On 21 minutes Stacey Lee was on target again to claim her hat trick with good individual work to beat her marker and place a shot beyond the despairing Fermanagh Keeper.  It was not all one way traffic and in fact for a spell it was end to end with Ruth Brown hitting the post for Mid Ulster before Louise McFredrick hit the post for Fermanagh at the other end.  Fermanagh were enjoying a bit of pressure and won 2 corners in quick succession.  From the 2nd Louise McFredrick was on hand to convert and make it 4-1.  Just before the break  Hannah Turkington who had been playing well on the right side of midfield left the action due to injury and Emma McFarland took to the pitch as replacement. Noels managed to interupt his sunbathing to take the half time team talk and Mid Ulster started the second half the brightly. Great work from Hayley O’Donnell and Lisa Richardson teed up Simone Magill to finish and make the score 5-1.  At this point Mid Ulster were forced to make another change due to injury with the "experienced" (a nice way of saying slow & unfit) Clare Charles replacing Claire Brown.  Mid Ulster continued to dominate with everyone wanting to get involved and even Karen Donnell had a shot on goal but the Fermanagh goal was holding firm.  Ruth Brown must have thought she had the wrong boots on when she had an open goal from 6 yards and the ball flew over the bar.  Noels technical description was that she skied it!!Moments later however she more than made up for it with a well taken strike to leave the score 6-1.  Fermanagh continued to work hard but they were just being outplayed in a number of areas.  A free kick from Hayley O’Donnell was next to add to the scoreline.  Hayleys effort needed no help as it curled past the Fermanagh no 1 even if Simone Magill did try to claim the credit for it.  Fermanaghs misery was further compounded as from a Hayley O’Donnell corner they could only turn the ball into their own net.  Louise McFredrick for Fermanagh had a great snap shot superbly saved by Jacqueline Burns as the clock ran down.  Moments later the whistle blew to signal a great finish to the season for Mid Ulster final score Fermanagh Mallards 1  Mid Ulster 8
