NORTHERN Ireland U17 Women qualified for the next phase of the UEFA European Championships after a 4-1 victory over Israel last night at The Showgrounds, Coleraine. Mid Ulster Coach Noel Mitchell knew his side had the outcome of the group in their own hands and he sent out an attacking side to try to try to achieve the result needed.  Indeed the N. Ireland girls were on the attack from the start and Keeper Jacqueline Burns was rarely troubled in the first half.  After sustained pressure side Chloe McCarron made the breakthrough.  She  received the ball 25 yards out, spotted the Israeli goalkeeper off the line and superbly dipped in her shot under the crossbar.

the pressure was getting to Noel

McCarron struck again ten minutes later with a 25-yard lob to double Northern Ireland's lead. A few minutes later Aoife Curran tested the 'keeper from distance but her effort went wide. Then, a minute from the break, Annie Timoney worked the ball well down the right to find Amy Burden who then controlled, turned and fired past Fortuna Rubin to make it 3-0 at the break. Israel had nothing to loose and after the break they came more and more into the game.  Emma McFarland and her associates in the back line were kept busy and it took a spectacular strike from Israel to finally penetrate.  Saja Ibrahim scored with an impressive strike. Unaware of the score in the other game N. Ireland still pushed for goals and with five minutes remaining, Aimee Macklin restored Northern Ireland's three goal cushion with a low drive into the corner after Timoney had created the opening from a counter-attack. And it was nearly 5-1 a minute from time after Samantha Kelly burst into the box after beating two defenders only to see her effort well saved.  At the final whistle the girls and the coaching staff were informed of the score in the other match.  Italy had beaten England by the same scoreline with the result that N.Ireland had topped the group and qualified for the next round.  So the celebrations began!
