Ballymena Success

Mid Ulster travelled to Ballymena for the second game in their NIWFA Premier League campaign.  The availability of Aoife Curran was a bit of welcome news for the squad as the girls attempted to bounce back from the narrow opening week defeat.  The game started with Ballymena getting stuck in and the Mid Ulster girls knew they were going to be in for match from early on.  Emma McFarland for Mid Ulster was being kept busy as Ballymena applied the pressure down the left wing.  After the early Ballymena pressure Mid Ulster started to get a foothold in the game with Chloe McCarron showing composure in the mid field area to provide a few opportunities for Hannah Turkington and Chloe Barnes.  The game was very tight and with both teams giving everything it was going to take something special to break the deadlock.  Samantha Kelly was to provide that something.  Receiving the ball on the left wing Samantha shifted the ball inside to beat her marker and strike a low shot into the bottom corner.  Ballymena were determined to get back into the game and it was taking some stout defensive work from the Mid Ulster back line to keep the pressure at bay.  Both Claire Rooney and Karen Donnell received bloody noses for their efforts such was the intensity of the battle.  Behind them again Jacqueline Burns was solid in goals with some great takes from corners and a good tip over maintaining the visitors narrow lead.

It wasn’t all one way traffic and Lyn Sommervilles pace on the right did provide some respite as the Mid Ulster girls tried to grab the goal that would guarantee the 3 points.  Lisa Richardson was also dangerous with a couple of great deliveries from free kicks but as it was neither team could find a breakthrough.  Louise Murphy replaced Aoife Curran in the second half and the Mid Ulster girls saw the game out to secure their first three points of the season.
