Preds get the edge in the cup

Mid Ulster returned again to Shorts playing fields on Wednesday night to once again take on Predators this time in the league cup.  Mind you Ma had us down to play Cliftonville at Solitude.  We are not sure if she is operating a week ahead or what the craic is but thank goodness Junkie is on hand to keep the thing right.

The leaning goalpost of Belfast

Before the game started the substitutes on the side line were put through a bit of a warm up by Rhonda.  Not sure if it was lunges or the splits but it looked a bit tricky anyway.  Jacquelines warm up was equally energetic , she leant against the goalpost that long it actually started to bend!!  Anyway on to the match. Mid Ulster definitely started better than the previous week and a slight change to the shape of the team looked to be reaping dividends as Mid Ulster bossed the early exchanges.  Hayley O’Donnells lay off to Chloe McCarron went just over and was a sign of things to come.  Adele Gillespie won an early free kick but Aoife Currans strike just wouldn’t dip.  Lisa Richardson was finding great joy on the left side with some super balls down the line for Chloe McCarron to chase.  The football was a delight to watch but the breakthrough was not forthcoming.  At the other end Predators had their moments too.  Jacqueline Burns had to be on her toes to cover one good through ball and Claire Rooney and Karen Donnell had to be alert to the Predators threat on the break.  Mid Ulster continued to exert pressure winning a number of corners throughout the half after persistence from Samantha Kelly and Chloe McCarron.  Hayley O’Donnell got a low shot away as the ball broke from one such corner and the Predators back line were relieved to see it go narrowly wide.  With 33 minutes on the clock Mid Ulster were left shocked when Predators took a somewhat unexpected lead.  An underhit back pass had Jacqueline Burns under great pressure and her off balance clearance just failed to clear the closing Predators player.  The ball ricocheted off Megan Wetheralls back and over the line to give Predators the lead.  The Mid Ulster girls picked themselves up again and took up where they had left off.  The Predators goal survived intact until the half time whistle but it wasn’t for the lack of pressure from the visitors. Mid Ulster started the second half well and once again Chloe McCarron had an early shot, this time drawing a fine save from the Predators no1.  Shortly after Mid Ulster won a free kick on the edge of the box and Adele Gillespie dinked a great effort over the wall and with the keeper beaten only the bar could thwart the effort.  Quickest to the rebound was Stacey Lee and she buried the ball only for the celebrations to be cut short as the referee blew for offside.  A close call by the official and not a popular one with the Mid Ulster supporters.  Mid Ulster continued to press and Samantha Kelly went close with a shot.  A substitution for Mid Ulster saw Sarah Connolly replace Stacey Lee and it was not long before she was involved in the action.  Connollys quick feet and one twos were giving Predators another headache but their back line was disciplined and the offside trap was deployed well to stifle the Mid Ulster attacks.  On the break too Predators were still a threat and as Mid Ulster chased the game they had to maintain some composure at the back.  As the clock ticked down Mid Ulster had to go for it and winger Hannah Turkington replaced defender Karen Donnell.  With three at the back Mid Ulster pushed for the equaliser.  Emma McFarland and Hannah Turkington were threatening down the right wing but the Mid Ulster girls just couldn’t find the final shot.  At the other end Predators had a chance to put the game out of sight when a free kick broke loose but the combined efforts of Claire Rooney and Jacqueline Burns kept the Mid Ulster girls in the game.  A couple of late surges from Aoife Curran and Claire Rooney came to nothing and as the final whistle sounded it was a disappointing end to the night for the Mid Ulster girls. Final score Predators 1 Mid Ulster 0 Team J Burns, C Rooney, K Donnell (H Turkington), E McFarland, L Richardson, A Curran, C McCarron, H O’Donnell, S Kelly, S Lee ( S Connolly), A Gillespie.
