Mid Ulster progress to Semi finals

Mid Ulster travelled to Dromore in the quarter finals of the Coca Cola Irish Cup on a beautiful summers evening.  In sweltering conditions both teams took to the pitch and the weather appeared to take its toll more on the spectators rather than the players.

Mid Ulster started brightly and an early attack saw Claire Brown go close at the back post after great work from Ruth Bell and Adele Gillepsie.  Dromore responded well and went up the pitch forcing a corner after a clearance from Karan Donnell.  The ensuing corner was cleared but Mid Ulster did not take the early warning and a bit of a blunder from a high ball across the box eluded everyone except the Dromore number 10 who finished off with an easy header at the back post.  So with 6 minutes played and the home team in front Mid Ulster knew that they had a game on their hands.  Their response was good as they put the pressure onto the Dromore back line.  Adele Gillespie saw her first shot held by the keeper but she made no mistake moments later when a shot from the left hand side of the area drew the teams level with 11 minutes on the clock.  Mid Ulster continued the pressure and Sarah Connolly was showing good strength up front to hold the ball up for her supporting midfielders.  With 15 minutes played a great combination from Hayley O’Donnell, Lisa Richardson and Ruth Brown teed up Sarah Connolly who made no mistake with her finish to put the visitors into a deserved lead.  With a few nerves settled and their tails up Mid Ulster continued to create chances.  Chloe McCarron was snuffing out the Dromore threat in midfield and a great ball to Claire Brown saw a cross picked up by Adele Gillespie but she just couldn’t get enough power on her shot.  Dromore were restricted to shots from distance but as the half progressed they did enjoy a spell of pressure winning a corner in the process.  The corner was well cleared  and Lisa Richardson pushed on to provide a cross for Sarah Connolly to once again finish superbly.  With Mid Ulster leading 3-1 and 33 minutes played Dromore pushed on and were unlucky not to get themselves back in the game.  After a bit of uncertainty in the Mid Ulster back line it took a goal line clearance from Emma McFarland to keep the score intact going into the half time break. Dromore started the second half on the attack but it wasn’t long til Mid Ulster had their first attack.  Ruth Bell had a shot just wide and this was the start of sustained Mid Ulster pressure.  Sarah Connolly was proving a handful for the Dromore back line and their only answer was to give her some close physical attention.  One such challenge saw Sarah seeing stars and a free kick awarded.  Chloe Mc Carron stepped up and her effort caused mayhem in the penalty area as the ball came back of the keeper to Claire Brown whose reaction header was only stopped by the bar.  As Dromore breathed a sigh of relief more pressure was forthcoming with Claire Brown and Adele Gillespie going close.  Louise Murphy replaced Ruth Brown after 57 minutes and Mid Ulster continued to press.  Dromore did have their chances but Claire Rooney in particular was winning everything at the back and ably assisted by Karen Donnell this meant Jacqueline Burns was having a quiet enough time.  At the other end Sarah Connolly attempted to grab her hat trick with a spectacular overhead kick.   After 69 minutes Chloe Barnes replaced Emma McFarland for Mid Ulster and she was immediately involved with some good crosses from the right but Mid Ulster couldn’t find the final touch.  Further efforts from Chloe McCarron and Louise Murphy suffered the same outcome and this gave Dromore some hope.  Once again Dromore enjoyed a spell of pressure winning a free kick from what seemed like a great tackle by Karen Donnell but Jacqueline Burns showed good hands from the resultant free.  As the clock ran down Dromore could find no way through the Mid Ulster rear guard and the tie ended with Mid Ulster progressing on a scoreline of 3 -1.
