First friendly for the Mid Ulster girls

Mid Ulster hosted Comber Rec in their first pre season friendly of 2014.  With a squad of 15 players available the Mid Ulster girls got a chance for a run out and for a few players to stake their claims for various positions.  The opposition proved to be a good test for the Mid Ulster girls and whilst they may play in a lower league their organisation and commitment meant that this would be no easy ride.  Mid Ulster started with a few new faces on the pitch with Tiffany Lindsay in goals for Jacqueline Burns who was on International duty.  The absence of Emma McFarland due to injury saw Chloe Barnes start at right back and then the familiar back line of Captain Claire Rooney, Aoife Curran and Lisa Richardson.  In the middle Chloe McCarron was partnered by new signing Alice Smith and another new face Cathy Rees started on the right wing.  Samantha Kelly completed the midfield lining out in her normal left wing position.  Up front Sarah Connolly and Adele Gillespie provided the striking partnership. Mid Ulster controlled the early stages of the game and whilst the playing surface didn't always allow for pretty football the Mid Ulster girls moved the ball around well.  Comber Recs number one was busy on a number of occasions as she kept the scores even for the first 20 minutes.  The Mid Ulster pressure eventually yielded a reward as Samantha Kelly popped up to open the scoring from the left wing.  The first substitution of the game paid dividends shortly thereafter as Hannah Turkington scored with her first touch after some good work by Adele Gillespie.  Two debutants got on the score sheet next.  Cathy Rees with a superb run and shot and then Alice Smith with a header from Chloe McCarrons corner.  A knock to Chloe Barnes saw Chloe Bowden take to the field but thankfully the substitution was just precautionary.  The second half saw Louise Murphy, Lyn Sommerville, Rachael Rodgers, Michaela McGuigan and Dana Suitor all take to the field and every one of them put in a good account of themselves.  Only one goal in this half and it went to Comber Rec but on the balance of play Mid Ulster should perhaps have done better.  A good start to the year and many thanks to Comber Rec for a good game.
