Balllymena game ends in stalemate

Mid Ulster hosted Balllymena on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.  An evenly matched game was anticipated with both teams sitting mid table and both having had topsy turvy results throughout the season.  The game got off to a cagey start but as the half progressed Mid Ulster began to edge the possession.  Hannah Turkington linked up well with Sarah Connolly but the Ballymena defence was quick to close down and close the danger.  A shot from Chloe McCarron was the next threat from Mid Ulster but it was just over the bar.  McCarron was involved again moments later when her burst through the middle saw a great ball into Sarah Connolly with the Ballymena number one saving well with her feet.  After this spell of Mid ulster pressure Ballymena stepped things up a notch and they too enjoyed possession but without really troubling Jacqueline Burns in the Mid Ulster goal.  Mid Ulster finished the half with Cathy Rees having a shot well saved and Claire Rooney going close before her skills were required at the other end with a well timed tackle preventing a scoring opportunity for the visitors right on the stroke of half time.   The second half was more of the same with both teams enjoying possession without a lot of clear cut chances.  Early chances fell to Adele Gillespie and Sarah Connolly but once again the Ballymena keeper was well positioned to deal with these.  Dana Bettany replaced Hannah Turkington.  Players on both sides were feeling the pace as the game neared its conclusion with a couple of stoppages for cramp and whilst the intensity of the game didn’t slack the breakthrough was not to come.  Although Mid Ulster may feel disappointed not to have taken all 3 points the draw was probably a fair result.
